BUT. There seems to be a current obsession with alien horror. From the excellent Alien Quadrilogy and the astoundingly good The Thing (1982) Carpenter remake of the 1951 film Thing from Another World, to the laughably abominable Cowboys & Aliens (2011) and the fairly satisfying remake/prequel of The Thing (2011), very little SF other than Star Trek seems to involve science and fiction. Most of it looking more like gothic horror in a spacesuit.
They can do better than that.
There have been some amazing science fiction novels written that did not involve scary alien monsters that eat people. Some of Philip K Dick’s novels have been adapted reasonably well. Ray Bradbury’s not so well. But there are some excellent SF mines as yet untapped. Why can’t they make movies (without bastardisation) from more of the classic-era stories of writers such as Larry Niven, Asimov, Sam Delaney, Alfred Bester, Heinlein, Clarke et al…
