Had an interesting morning. A fuel tanker crashed and exploded on the highway into town early this morning and there is a raging blaze they can’t extinguish. It will probably burn all day. It has set fire to the vegetation around it, and the Fire services from all around are battling to keep it under control. I had to go down to assess the risk from the smoke (rubber, petrol, paint, oils etc) to the residents of Katanning. I could not get close enough unfortunately to get any really good pics of the fire, but what I did get is fairly dramatic. Then I drove around to Police Pools road to view it from the other side. That gave me a good view of the dispersal pattern of the smoke. I concluded there was little risk to residents, but just in case things changed I notified the old folks home to be aware of the situation in case any residents suffered respiratory distress.
I also went to pick up Ms Vstar from Pep. He has given her a full service and tune up with new filters and an oil change, and adjusted her twiddly bits.
So we are ready to rock again. Weekend ride coming up.
Headed out early Saturday morning to view the wreckage. It was already on the back of a truck about to be carted away. There was not much of it. A shapeless metal mass about the size of a transit van. A lot of the tanker must have been aluminium that melted and burned.
Update: Added some pics taken by Cindy of FESA after the fire was extinguished.
