A Worrisome SCAM

I think this is very important.   Please pass it on to the vulnerable.

My colleague Steve forwarded a query (below), and  I made a mental note to look into the Bio disc, but
it took me some time to get around to it. I am really sorry it took me so long.  In the meantime I have learned that
people in Tuvalu are giving up on using their usual domestic water treatment processes in favour of this new “miracle” product which, gives me great concern, as I know how quickly word spreads, and how a single misguided, even though sincere, testimonial can get a lot of people hooked.

To quote the suppliers: “The BioDisc is made of technically engineered natural minerals which have been structurally bonded in glass, at molecular level, using high heat fusion methods. This long-lasting natural scalar resonance has the ability to be transferred to and rejuvenate the molecular structures of all liquids. (Are you kidding????)

The BioDisc has been evaluated by various
institutions   (WHICH?) and is
known to reduce water surface tension value  (so does detergent??). This
in turn makes
water more hydratious  (??) and improves the transfer of nutrients in
and out
of the body cells. Water treated with the BioDisc also produces
beautiful and good water crystals, an indication of water with high
energy levels and good quality.  (!!!)

“technically engineered natural minerals which have been structurally bonded in glass, at molecular level, using high heat fusion methods” (= it is a glass plate!)

Here is a picture of the product.   you can check it out at http://thebiodiscmiracle.nextlvl.net/

(“Miracle” is one of the dead-giveaway clues)

Various test results (WHAT TESTS – WHAT RESULTS?) also reveal that the BioDisc can increase the energy and harmony levels in users who use the disc or drink water treated with it. (pseudoscentific claptrap!!!)

They say it
1. Improves tastes of all liquids   ((from underneath the glass?..)
2. Increases drinking water energy level  (what the hell is that?????)
3. Increases body energy level   (How????)
4. Maximizes nutritional benefits   (of what??)
5. Improve taste    (of what??)
6. Extend shelf life of all vegetables, fruits and meats   (how??)

7. Improve wellness   (how???)
8. Enhances immune system  (oh yeah???)
9. Rejuvenates cells,  (Evidence?)
10. Increases blood oxygen levels   (Now we are getting silly!!!)

11. Calms and balances  (!)
12. Assists in pain relief  (evidence?)
13. Enhances potency of food supplements – increasing the hydration levels of the drinking water taken with the supplements
(increases the hydration levels of drinking water????)

14. The healing power of Biodisc has proven to amazingly
balance the ‘yin’ and ‘yang’ and cure various syndromes such as autism,
diabetes, high blood pressure, high level of cholesterol, high level of
uric acid, migraines, pains, swelling and inflammation, rheumatism,
stiff neck, leg cramp, stomachache, headache, asthma, kidney problem,
allergy, jet lag, fatigue, muscular pains, stresses, and more
(cure?  pseudoscientific claptrap!!!)

(Hmmm… proven to amazingly – how was this proven?

Below it says There are no known test and approval bodies to date as the science is so far advanced so where is the evidence and what is the proof?)

As soon as I saw this I was quite alarmed indeed.  I have seen this sort of
pseudoscience language before.  I spent ten years at the Ministry of
Health in NZ investigating bogus therapeutic claims and scams of this
nature.  I was even more concerned when I heard that Tuvaluans are
paying $400 US per disc for this non beneficial, unsafe SCAM  product,
and forgoing bona fide safe water practices, having placed their faith
in it.

A simple test of the usefulness  of this disc to opacific people is to see if it kills
bacteria in water.  Easy to do.  Needs no advanced science.  To test therapeutic claims there are simple double blind trials which all reputable therapeutic products undergo. Nothing advanced there.  Not hard to arrange.  Not done.

What scientific tests have been done on the bio disc, and what are the results? The website only gives pseudoscientific garbage and anecdotal evidence, and testimonials, the most dangerous of all.  These are all sure signs of a scam product.
They even throw in a medical looking diagram as ‘evidence”  (of what?).

The fact they are unwilling to submit the product for testing and approval, and have to concoct  this mumbo jumbo explanation confirms my belief the product is a scam

I was even more alarmed when I saw on their website  that you don’t even put the disc in the water to be treated, you put a container of water on the disc!  That squelched
any possibility of some unknown biocidal properties.

To be fair they do not claim it makes non-potable water safe, but they do not
boldly say so up front, and they do make some very absurd claims.  It
appears that some Pacific islanders are being gulled into believing it
can do anything, include replacing their current treatment.

On their website they have a FAQ page, http://thebiodiscmiracle.nextlvl.net/FAQ.html

Hidden away in there is this information:

10. What is the difference
between the BioDisc and Water filtration
Treatment Systems or Oxygenated Water?

The systems mentioned are in
the main filtration systems that
sanitize and sterilize water
(WRONG!) .
The disc does neither. It simply adds a
positive energy into your chosen drinking water.

other words you pay $400 for it to do NOTHING!. This is their let out
against any claims it does not work.
They TOLD you!  It is faith in
positive energy that does the rest, ie the placebo effect).

interesting and of greater prominence is:

Do you have any International organization approve or
recognize your
bio technology on the bio discs such as FDA?

Diagram of chakrasImage via Wikipedia

to which they reply:

The Bio Disc
is based on the facts and theories of Quantum Physics. There are no
known test and approval bodies to date as the science is so far advanced
of modern day technology.
“What we can say is
that it does
not contain radio active element that is harmful to human body and it
contains potassium which is used in the functioning of the nervous
system, heart and the brain.
All the tests
carried out so far
using Prognos and Medec machines prove that the wellness of the body is
improved simply by drinking water stood on the disc.
Traditional Chinese Medicines’ the disc has also proven to be worthy a s
a wellness tool as it balances the chakras, unblocks the meridians and
brings Ying and Yang into line..

(Prognos and Medec machines are another “product” . Same thing, different shape. I am not even going into them). The certifications and evaluations shown in the website are all fake issued with no scientific basis. The Schott manufacturing certificate merely confirms it is a glass plate made to a particular standard.

Facts and theories of quantum physics, indeed!  This is the new hokum buzzword.

People, this is all pseudoscientific BULLSHIT.  I have had some experience in this field.

If you want to recognise pseudoscience, check out the Biodisc website against the symptoms described here:

See how many ticks this product gets.

I had hoped that I would find some definitive and authoritative debunking of the product already on line,   but no luck.  However I did find enough to demonstrate that the company will not disclose valid details of location or any details about itself, (it appears that addresses it does give are actually bogus according to one person in
Malaysia who checked) – it is flooding the blogosphere with obviously planted testimonials, and that nowhere whatsoever is any shred of evidence that this product has any valid water treatment or health giving properties.  There is nothing but vague statements about what is in it.   All the talk about “
long-lasting natural scalar resonance has the ability to be transferred to and rejuvenate the molecular structures of all liquids ”  is just so much typical horse hockey.

I ask you please to pass this warning on to all people you know in the Pacific who may put themselves at risk using this product, and who will be throwing away good money to do so.  It is an expensive product.

Lastly,  This Email is my own opinion and not necessarily that of my employers; SOPAC, but it should be.

Extract from The Email:

Hi All,
| Thanks Steve for the information.  Does anyone know
anything about a
| product called a ‘bio-disc’ it is very popular
here in Tuvalu, as a water
| purifier, and apparently it also helps
with hair loss.
| Regards,
| K
