Interesting….

Some very interesting comments in the Fiji Times today.  Frighteningly interesting, and very revealing.
The following comments are in response to the recent decriminalisation of homosexuality here in Fiji:

So there you are Fiji, you may become the first nation in the region
where sodomy and homosexuality is legal. What’s next? Same sex
marriages?
This puts us on par with the biblical Sodom and
Gomorrah.

and
There were only two genders created by God in the beginning. Expect his
wrath upon us which is something those who have legalised the issue have
experienced.
and
Homosexuality led to the demise of Sodom and Gomorrah by the creator
himself. So far our beloved Fiji has been spared earthquakes, tsunamis,
and other large-scale disasters.I beg you, Ratu Voreqe
Bainimarama, please, sir, don’t let the wrath of God befall us during
your tenure.Tolerating gays in our midst is human but the
Government must not be seen to knowingly bless this degrading sin. It is
blasphemy.

A little more tolerant, but still somewhat ignorant…
Christians preach the love of Christ and accept with open arms
alcoholics, drug addicts, prostitutes, criminals, the physically
disabled and the likes
but we tend to discriminate against those with
homosexual tendencies. (what??? emphasis mine).

Jesus also died for them and they are
candidates for heaven.

Making laws to criminalise same sex
relationships in line with God’s command will not alter the choice of
those who choose this relationship. They have made use of their
God-given freedom of choice and we should respect that.

This raises the old chestnut rationalisation of the "free will" explanation for why God allows sinful/evil/immoral behaviour.  On the one hand we have a seriously stated reminder that this loving God of theirs sends earthquakes, tsunamis,
and other large-scale disasters to punish us, as in Sodom and Gomorrah, yet we have this "free will" excuse/rationalisation that explains why he does NOT intervene when we think he should.  I have always had a problem with that, and my failure to resolve the conundrum while in the tutelage of the mother church was my first step towards thinking rationally and concluding that all the teachings of my Catholic upbringing were illogical and wrong; nothing more than bronze age superstition.

The problem was this:  whenever I enquired why God allowed people to do terrible things to innocent people, they told me that free will is granted to man to allow him to choose between right and wrong. When i asked why God allowed terrible natural disasters take innocent lives, suddenly his mighty mind was too great to understand, and we just had to accept his will.  One minute they know quite clearly what is in God’s mind, and the next it is unfathomable.

So the bad guys get to choose whether to be a decent sort, or alternatively to rape murder, steal, and commit genocidal atrocities and otherwise have a bit of a lark.  But where is the free will of the victims of these crimes?

Please don’t respond, I already have the answer.  It is that Man created this imaginary friend in man’s own image. As our image of ourselves evolves, so does that of your imaginary friend.  Your loving god is a far cry from the jealous wrathful one of the old testament.  To say he is eternal and unchanging only accentuates the self deception you are practising.  however, some people have clearly not even evolved that far.

The point is that your god is imaginary, and cannot be blamed for what goes wrong, and conversely should not be praised or thanked for what goes right.  Shit happens.  The Universe is full of random events.  Deal with it and do the best you can.

And that is all I have to say about that.

About Uisce úr

Though I am old with wandering Through hollow lands and hilly lands, I will find out where she has gone, And kiss her lips and take her hands; And walk among long dappled grass, And pluck till time and times are done, The silver apples of the moon, The golden apples of the sun.
