I saw it first on NZCity this morning.   http://home.nzcity.co.nz/news/article.aspx?id=105597&fm=psp,tst  this
morning, and discussed it over the fence with the neighbours, who had just heard from colleagues that a tsunami may be due in Fiji about 8.07, if it came at all. That was 7.50. Time to go.

Interesting
exercise in what to take in my pack. First texted the house girl not to
come, then packed pills, laptop,  photo hard drive, passports, wallet..
Farewell house, hope to see you this evening.  On my bike, inland route up the hill.

One has to take these things seriously,

Tsunami warning for Pacific after quake

7:42AM Wednesday Sep 30, 2009

A tsunami warning has been issued for New Zealand, Samoa and other Pacific islands after an earthquake.

The quake measured 7.9 on the Richter scale and was centred 200 kilometres from Apia at a depth of 35 kilometres.

It struck at 6.48am NZT. Radio New Zealand reported that residents of Samoa were fleeing to higher ground as aftershocks continued.

The tsunami warning is in effect for American Samoa, Samoa, Niue, Wallis-Futuna, Tokelau, Cook Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Kermadec Islands, Fiji, Howland-Baker, Jarvis Island, French Polynesia, New Zealand and Palmyra Island.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it was not known that any tsunami had been generated but that an earthquake of that size could create a destructive tsunami.
